When is the best time to visit Ukulhas?

For a holiday focused on beach days, January to March is a good starting point. These months fall in the Maldives' generally drier northeast monsoon, with slightly more average sunshine. Weather still varies, so allow some flexibility in your plans.

If you've already chosen your dates, use the seasonal pattern to plan a mix of beach time, village exploring and excursions. Check the forecast closer to your trip, especially before days out on the water.

The seasons at a glance

The Maldives Meteorological Service describes a warm, humid climate throughout the year. Its national guidance places the dry northeast monsoon in January to March and the wet southwest monsoon from mid-May to November. April and December are transitional periods.

The southwest monsoon brings greater rainfall, while the northeast monsoon has slightly more average sunshine. These are patterns across the Maldives, rather than a forecast for your week on Ukulhas.

If your dates are flexible

Start with the generally drier months if long afternoons on the beach are your priority. Compare flights and room quotes together, then use the budget guide to add transfers, meals and excursions.

If you're travelling in the wetter season

During the southwest monsoon, leave room to change the order of your plans. Enjoy the beach when conditions suit and make time for the village and its cafés between outings. Keeping some days free gives you more options if a boat trip needs to change.

Manta rays through the year

Reef manta rays live in Maldives waters all year. The Maldives Manta Conservation Programme, affiliated with the Manta Trust, describes them as year-round residents that move across the atolls with the monsoons, following shifts in the plankton they feed on. Their movements affect where they gather, and sightings on any particular trip are never guaranteed. Manta snorkelling is one of the excursions Koimala provides.

April and December need a closer look

April and December fall between the monsoons. If you're travelling in either month, check the forecast for your dates and leave some flexibility in your beach and boat plans.

Check the sea as well as the sky

Look at sea conditions as well as the chance of rain. Conditions affect the speedboat crossing and whether an excursion can go ahead.

If there's an excursion you'd especially like to try, a longer stay gives you more possible dates. Our stay-length guide can help you choose between a short break and more time on the island.

Before you travel

Check the meteorological service's weather forecast closer to departure. The arrival-planning guide covers fitting the speedboat to your flights at both ends. When you're ready to plan your stay, ask about your dates.
